Què es un standard?

En la terminologia dels afeccionats al Jazz, un standard es una cançó que ha resistit el pas del temps, per tant que s’ha interpretat en diversos estils i ritmes, universalment acceptada i que roman en els repertoris de les successives generacions d’intèrprets. L’origen dels standards es molt divers: des de cançons populars, temes de moda en el seu moment, temes de revistes musicals i el music hall (especialment de Broadway), del ragtime, dels ballroom, del cabaret, o del cinema, del Blues, dels Worksong, del Gospel, del cançoners populars (que inclou les cultures populars dels immigrants- espanyols, francesos, anglesos, irlandesos, alemanys, polonesos, xinesos, jueus, grecs, italians, etc.) i fins i tot de la música clàssica, i progressivament amb els anys de creacions jazzístiques pròpiament dites, escrites per compositors de Jazz.

En el conjunt dels standards també hi trobem les balades. Les balades son cançons, normalment romantiques i sentimentals, que es toquen amb tempos molt lents. Habitualment s’interpreten carregades de recursos i tics molt personals i característics. Acostumen a ser temes de lluïment de recursos tècnics i musicals. En el Jazz, i per a cada instrument hi ha verdaders especialistes en balades. De tota manera no ho considero un gènere o estil i penso que no val la pena diferenciar-les dels standards amb el sentit que els he definit.

Finalment els standards podríem considerar que són, ras i curt, “els temes de Jazz“. En definitiva es la forma en que ens arriba la música de Jazz, entenent com en Ferdinand Joseph Lamothe (conegut com a Jelly Roll Morton), nomenat per en Alan Lomax, Assistant-in-Charge of the Archive of American Folk, “l’inventor del Jazz“, que efectivament, “el Jazz no es una música si no una forma d’interpretar la música“.
Per tant, tot músic de Jazz ha de crear la seva col·lecció de temes preferits, el seu rebost de cultura musical, que li permeti expressar lo millor d’ell mateix. En aquest apartat, et convido a compartir alguns dels “meus” standards.

Els Standards com a material de referència

Actualment hi ha divers material en forma de “Play along“. A continuació una selecció de materials que et recomano.

En primer lloc i de forma molt destacada per la seva concepció didàctica i sistemàtica es el “Jazztastic! Initial Level“. Carish, International Music Publications, London, 1999. Aquests materials estan dins el marc del Jazz Síl·labus que en un atre apartat pots consultar. Et recomano adquireixis aquest material molt ben documentat i que va acompanyat d’un CD. En ambdós volums amb la sòlida secció rítmica de està formada per: Liam Noble (p), Andy Hamil (b), Tom Gordon (dm). La selecció de 8+8 temes molt coneguts, es prou representativa del gran repertori de Jazz i els tempos i arranjaments de molt gust.

Les versions incloses aquí son un complement per facilitar l’estudi de cada un dels temes. El llibre de “Nivell Inicial te els següents 8 temes molt ben seleccionats. En aquest volum es treballa fonamentalment el Blues, o les estructures més simples:

Una de les millors col·leccions de Standards es sens cap mena de dubte la Twelve Classic Jazz Standards wiht Two All Star Rhythm Sections i “Twelve More Classic Jazz Standards wiht Two All Star Rhythm Sections“. Music Minus One, New York, 1998. Total una colecció de 24 temes entre els dos volums que els agruparem segons les extraordinaries seccions rítmiques que acompanyen.

Body and Soul” is the title of a popular song written in 1930 by Edward Heyman, Robert Sour, Frank Eyton and Johnny Green. Es un 32AABA. It was introduced in the revue Three’s A Crowd by Libby Holman and used as a soundtrack theme in the 1947 film named for the song. The song became a jazz standard, with hundreds of versions performed and recorded by dozens of artists. The most famous of these is the take recorded by Coleman Hawkins and His Orchestra on October 11, 1939 at their only recording session for Bluebird, a subsidiary of RCA Victor. Hawkins’ solo on this take is considered to be “one of the finest examples of pure, spontaneous creative artistry in the history of jazz.” It was one of the first straight jazz records to become a commercial hit. This was unusual, as the song’s melody is never directly stated in the recording; Hawkins improvised on the tune’s chord progression for almost the entire take. “Enjoy yourself (it’s later than you think)”: is a popular song published in 1948, with music written by Carl Sigman and lyrics by Herb Magidson. Estructura de 16(AB). The most popular version of the song, recorded by Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians, was made on November 27 (some sources give November 28), 1949. The recording was released by Decca Records. Another recording, by Doris Day, was made on January 13, 1950 and released by Columbia Records. “I’ve heard that song before”. The music was written by Jule Styne, the lyrics by Sammy Cahn. The song was published in 1942. Estructura de 32(ABAC). Is a popular song. It was introduced by Frank Sinatra in the 1942 film Youth on Parade. It was recorded by Harry James and his Orchestra with Helen Forrest on vocal on July 31, 1942. It’s been a long, long time“, un tema popular nord-americà publicat el 1945, amb música de Jule Styne i lletre de Sammy Cahn que fou interpretat per Bing Crosby i, especialment per en Louis “Pops” Armstrong amb els All Stars. La versió que adjunto te una estructura de 16AB, en to de F i un tempo semi-lent de 90 pulsacions la negra. “Make love to me“. Is a 1954 popular song.The words and music were written by a larger team than normally is known to collaborate on a song: Bill Norvas, Allan Copeland, Leon Rappolo, Paul Mares, Ben Pollack, George Brunies, Mel Stitzel, and Walter Melrose. “Too Marvelous for Words” is a popular song written in 1937. Johnny Mercer wrote the lyrics for music composed by Richard Whiting. Es un “32 amb pont”: 32AABA. It was featured in the 1937 Warner Brothers film Ready, Willing and Able, as well as a production number in a musical revue on Broadway. It then became the love theme in the 1947 film noir Dark Passage directed by Delmer Daves, first in a version sung by Jo Stafford, then just instrumental as the love that finally reunites Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart is Too Marvelous for Words indeed. The lyrics are sophisticated and perfectly synchronized with the tune. Mercer successfully borrowed some lyric techniques from Ira Gershwin, and like Gershwin, he writes more about language than about love. Mack the Knife” o “The Ballad of Mack the Knife“, originalment “Die Moritat von Mackie Messer”, es un tema composat per Kurt Weill a partir de la lletra de Bertolt Brecht pel seu drama musical Die Dreigroschenoper, coneguda com “L’òpera de tres rals”. Fou representada per primera vega a Berlin el 1928.macktheknife_gats.MGU.

Em vas adoptar ben perdut i m’has ensenyat i fet aprendre sense donar-me lliçons. Gràcies per la felicitat que m’has donat durant tots aquests anys.

Admiro la teva visió pragmàtica i utòpica amb que encares els grans reptes, l’enfocament profundament emocional de pensar i actuar, l’obstinació de teixir teranyines solidaries per arreu, la teva autenticitat i fidelitat. Has estat el més gran i entranyable amic meu, sempre disponible.
